Upward Bound

About the Program

The Montana Tech TRIO Upward Bound Program is funded by the US Department of Education and serves students in Butte, Anaconda and Helena, providing low-income and potential first-generation students with the skills and motivation to complete high school, go to college, or pursue other postsecondary school and graduate from college or postsecondary school.

Student participants are eligible to participate in a six-week non-residential summer program held on the campus of Montana Tech. Students are offered an integrated curriculum on core academic subjects like science, language arts, foreign language, math, humanities, and computer technology. 

Services Offered

Upward Bound coordinators teach daily UB classes at the target schools.  The class curriculum covers various academic development subjects and college preparation topics, and provides vital services to Upward Bound students.  These services are FREE to all qualified participants:

  • Academic Advising
  • College and Career Exploration and Planning
  • Study skills and test-taking strategies
  • Tutoring in academic subjects
  • Postsecondary Application Assistance
  • Financial Aid and Scholarship Advising
  • Financial Aid Application Assistance
  • Financial Literacy Information
  • College Entrance Examination Information and Registration Assistance
  • Career Awareness and Planning
  • Connections to Tutorial Services
  • College Campus Tours and Visits
  • Educational Field Trips
  • Students who regularly participate in all parts of the program; maintain good grades are eligible for a quarterly stipend of up to $90. 

Who is Eligible to Participate?

To participate in Upward Bound, students must:

 Attend one of the Target Schools:

  • Anaconda High School, Butte High, Capital High School or Helena High School
    • Must demonstrate a need for academic support
    • Participants must have completed the eigth grade but not entered the twelfth grade 
    • Two-thirds (2/3) of the participants are required to be both low-income and first-generation college bound students  
    • One-third (1/3) of the participants can be either low-income or first generation college bound students
